TRiO Digitial Storytelling & Leadership Course

Our vision for creating the TRiO-SSS Leadership Digital Storytelling course has been to develop engaged and thriving Haskell TRiO-SSS student leaders to create a unique student-driven learning community. This 12-week course focuses on a strengths-based approach to leadership and leadership development as well as introduces students to digital media storytelling and marketing. We want to provide our students with opportunities to understand and practice essential skills such as continual learning, communication, problem-solving, goal achievement, conflict resolution, and the study of digital media, mass media, and marketing.

Student Learning Outcomes

Through active engagement in the course and course materials, students will:

  1. Show a deepened commitment to developing oneself into a confident and capable leader.

  2.  Identify one’s talents, how to develop them as strengths, and link them to the work of the leader.

  3. Study and practice various skills related to effective leadership.

  4. Develop production, performance and self-expression competencies through creating media in a variety of written, oral, digital and multimedia productions.

  5. Strengthen collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills through leadership activities.

  6. Deepen reflective awareness of the role of leadership and the use of technology.

The learning objectives are designed to give students insights into leadership theory and how it applies in real-world contexts. Specifically, to improve and address skills in key areas of leadership, including change and innovation, reflection, collaboration, communication, conflict, and multicultural awareness.

In this course, students will become familiar with different ways of exercising leadership, their own strengths and weaknesses, and how they can best work with others in a leadership context. They will learn and apply leadership skills in a hands-on practical way that encourages student leadership within the TRiO-SSS program, Haskell Campus, and beyond. “Research evidence showed that digital storytelling increases student motivation and engagement in student-centered projects. Students are engaged when they were in control of reflecting, visualizing, and creating more meaningful digital stories to share with a large audience.” –Mindy Foelske

Each student will be equipped with a GoPro camera to document their experience within the 12-week course and be responsible for creating course projects to encourage and engage their peers.  Throughout the course, students will be creating media to not only record their time at Haskell but develop skills that impact their communities through leadership. “By asking more of our students in the forms of leadership and storytelling, together we can create a unique student-driven learning community that leads to completion and success.”

At the end of the 12-week course, each student will have created a digital Portfolio that will Include:

  • TRiO-SSS Ted Talk to share with all TRiO-SSS Students on student success management. (2-4 minute  multimedia video)

  • Create marketing campaigns on student success management (any media)

  • Develop, plan, market, and co-lead a Leadership Seminar Campaign to be shared with all TRiO-SSS students on Student Success Management (market, advertise, and video)
